Cloudsplitter – Islander 36

Designed by naval architect Alan Gurney, the Islander 36 is a very popular classic sailing yacht. It points well, is fast on reaches and handles well in a seaway. In northern California, and particularly in the San Francisco Bay area, where winds can go from 15 to 40 knots in minutes, it is especially popular. Well over 100 Islander 36's sail out of the Bay Area alone, where it has been called a perfectly suited boat, because of the ease with which it handles the bay’s tricky winds and challenging sea conditions.

Blue water capability is also an I-36 strong point. At least three have circumnavigated the globe, the latest in 2009, by 17 year old Zac Sunderlund, who made history as the youngest sailor at that time ever to have sailed around the world alone.

Fast changing winds and challenging seas aren’t limited to San Francisco bay or to blue water sailing. Similar challenges are also encountered sailing southern Lake Michigan, making the Islander 36 an ideal boat for Chicago sailors, too.

Cloudsplltter hasn’t sailed the globe, but she has extensively cruised Lake Michigan and the North Channel. You‘ll like the easy handling and balanced helm. Your crew will like the wider side decks than they’re accustomed to on smaller boats and your guests will appreciate the walk-down companionway steps and the push-button electric head.
